Course Purpose:
The i-Gel Airway Management Course is designed to develop participants’ skills and knowledge in the safe and effective use of the i-Gel supraglottic airway device for airway management in emergency and pre-hospital care settings.
This course supports competency development consistent with the principles of the HLT Health Training Package, particularly in relation to emergency response and airway management skills within the scope of First Aid, Event Health, and Paramedical practice.


Learning Outcomes:

On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the anatomy and physiology of the upper airway relevant to i-Gel insertion.

  2. Explain the indications, contraindications, and limitations associated with supraglottic airway devices.

  3. Prepare equipment and perform the correct insertion and placement of an i-Gel airway.

  4. Confirm effective ventilation and manage complications or ineffective airway placement.

  5. Demonstrate appropriate infection prevention, cleaning, and disposal procedures.

  6. Maintain accurate documentation and apply clinical governance principles relating to airway management.


Course Content:

  • Overview of airway anatomy and physiology

  • Airway assessment and management principles

  • Supraglottic airway devices overview (with emphasis on i-Gel)

  • i-Gel sizing, preparation, and insertion technique

  • Verification of placement (including chest rise and EtCOâ‚‚ confirmation)

  • Troubleshooting and complication management

  • Infection prevention and equipment reprocessing

  • Legal, ethical, and scope-of-practice considerations

  • Practical simulation and skill assessment

Course Delivery

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours

Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, such as providing CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques using a Bag Valve Mask (BVM) on manikins.

This course has a pre-requisite of HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy which much be completed either prior to undertaking this unit of competency. 

This certificate has an industry recommended renewal period of 12 months
