Course Purpose:
The Intra-Muscular (IM) Injection Course provides participants with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to safely prepare and administer intramuscular injections within their defined scope of practice. This program is designed for healthcare and first response personnel who may be required to administer medications via the IM route in emergency or clinical support environments under appropriate clinical direction.


Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify relevant anatomy and physiology associated with intramuscular injection sites.

  2. Explain the indications, contraindications, and potential complications of IM injections.

  3. Demonstrate correct preparation and administration techniques for intramuscular injection.

  4. Apply infection prevention and control procedures in accordance with current best practice.

  5. Accurately document medication administration and adverse reactions in line with clinical governance standards.

  6. Recognise and respond appropriately to immediate adverse effects or complications.


Course Content:

  • Overview of injection anatomy and physiology

  • Principles of medication administration via the IM route

  • Site selection (deltoid, vastus lateralis, ventrogluteal, dorsogluteal)

  • Equipment selection and preparation

  • Medication preparation and verification (including dosage checks)

  • Step-by-step administration technique

  • Post-administration care and monitoring

  • Adverse event recognition and management

  • Infection prevention and safe disposal procedures

  • Legal, ethical, and scope-of-practice considerations


Assessment:

Participants are required to demonstrate competency through:

  • Practical demonstration of IM injection technique on simulation models

  • Verbal questioning and observation by a qualified assessor

  • Completion of a brief written knowledge assessment


Course Duration:

Approximately 2–3 hours (depending on participant experience and group size).


Certification:

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Competency in Intra-Muscular Injection Technique.

This course is a non-accredited professional development program delivered by Category 5 Emergency Care. It is designed to support ongoing clinical skill development and does not result in a nationally recognised qualification.


Entry Requirements:

Participants should hold one or more of the following:

  • Current First Aid or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

  • Clinical qualification (e.g. Nurse, Paramedic, Medic, or Health Professional)

  • Demonstrated experience in patient care or medication administration under supervision


Delivery Mode:

  • Face-to-face practical workshop

  • Includes theory presentation, equipment demonstration, and simulated skill practice

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 1 Hour

Prerequiste/Corequsite: HLTAID013- Provide First Aid in a Remote or Isolated Site or

Second or Third Year University Paramedic or Nursing Student

This certificate has an industry recommended renewal period of 36 months

Performance task - Perform Intramuscular injection on simulated body part

Theory assessment – A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions
